Puerto Vallarta - Over the years, Puerto Vallarta has become a very important art center, with more galleries than any other Mexican coastal destination. Representing Mexico's finest artists as well as artists from other countries who have chosen Puerto Vallarta as their home, each gallery owner works closely with their established artists to bring the finest art to the public.

During the "art season," from November to April, select Puerto Vallarta art galleries hold weekly art openings to honor their artists and to introduce these artists' newest works. At these cocktail receptions, the public is invited to meet with the artists, view new work, and share in the wealth of culture the galleries present.

The first Old Town Art Walk of the 2005-2006 season opened on October 26th to an enthusiastic crowd, who visited the 17 participating galleries for a peek at the new works that will be presented this season. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Old Town Art Walks, which started in 1995 with only 6 participating galleries.

As one of the most popular yearly cultural events in Puerto Vallarta, the Old Town Art Walk has grown steadily over the years, and now includes 17 art galleries in the downtown Puerto Vallarta area: Galeria Arte Latinoamericano, Galeria Uno, Galeria Vallarta, Galeria des Artistes, Sergio Bustamente, Corsica Galeria, Galeria Corona, Galeria 8 & Mas (with 2 locations) Galeria Nelly, Leonardo Galeria, Galeria La Nana, Galeria de Ollas, Galeria Omar Alonso, Galeria Arte Popular Mexicano, Galeria Pacifico, Beatriz Narvaez Galeria and Galeria La Nana. At this season's opener, most galleries presented collective exhibitions, but Galeria Vallarta presented the abstract oils of Jesus Real Ruiz from San Miguel de Allende, along with some Day of the Dead theme paintings and engravings by Nicolas de Jesus. Since this year the Art Walk cocktail shows will be every Wednesday night from 6 to 10 pm, rather than every other Wednesday as in past seasons, the Nov. 2nd cocktail exhibitions continued the same shows or focused on Day of the Dead art and altars.

The November 9th Art Walk featured Celeste Acevedo at Galeria AL and Steve Fischer's large decorative abstract and impressionist oils at Galeria Vallarta, entitled "Visions of Autumn."

Galeria Corsica is opening an exhibition of the works by Luigi Fantini, an excellent collection of hyper-realistic paintings. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, November 16th at 6 pm with a cocktail reception, as part of the Old Town Art Walk.

On November 23rd, Galeria Vallarta welcomes Guillermo Saldaña and Jorgé Garcia from Mexico City for a joint exposition of their new works. Guillermo shows his works in New York City and promises us some great new paintings. This will be the 16th anniversary of Galeria Vallarta and owner Barbara Peters invites everyone to join her for the cocktail inauguration and the unveiling of her newly remodeled gallery, now located at Juarez 265 [instead of Juarez #263.]

In other art news, The Centro Cultural opened a new exhibit of local painters and sculptors with a cocktail and music on Friday, Nov. 4th. Also on the 4th, Galeria Dante hosted an opening for Rogelio Diaz with his unique paintings and Alvaro Zardoni's "Imaginary Portraits" in bronze.

A new art gallery, "Angeles y Demonios" opened on Nov. 5th in downtown Puerto Vallarta. This gallery, a long time dream of Jhovaneé Monge de Rottigni, wife of well known photographer Danilo Rottigni, and founders of Homes and Living Magazine, is located at Iturbide 261, [2 blocks north of City Hall.]

The charming 2 floor house has been converted into a gallery filled with unique art works by Omar Centeno Olguin, as well as Alexander Grosman, Ireri Topete, Javier Niño, José Marca and Luz Elena Moreno. Before the ribbon cutting by tourist director José Diaz Borioli, the guests were treated to an impressive modern dance exhibition with projections of images on the outdoor walls.

As the art season progresses, Galleria Dante owners Claire and Joe Guarniere will continue to put on their Friday evening art exhibit and cocktail receptions at their charming art gallery in the Romantic Zone. Their next show, scheduled to take place on Friday November 18th, will feature the art of Tellosa and Luis Castellanos Valui.

Both of these fine artists, known for their bright, vivid colors and the happiness that their works evoke, are well known amongst Puerto Vallarta art collectors. Claire and Joe Guarniere invite you to come meet these two delightful artists on Friday November 18, 2005 at 6 pm at Galleria Dante on Basilio Badillo 269. For more information call 222-2477.

As always, art abounds in Puerto Vallarta art galleries during the annual Puerto Vallarta Art Season. This year promises to be a real stunner - so be sure and visit your favorite gallery to check out their collections. Click HERE to see Artwalk Map
