International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament Update
email this pageprint this pageemail usMyles Lineberger - PVNN

Clarke Smith with his winning Marlin, second year in a row. Way to go Clarke!
The 50th Annual Puerto Vallarta International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament got off to a slow start, but it got better with each day. The first day looked bad, very bad, with only Sailfish and one Dorado being caught, and there were 102 boats fishing in the tournament. The winning Sailfish was caught on the first day.

The Yellowfin Tuna just weren't biting, with only three caught on the last day. Marlin had a little better showing with 10 Marlin landed. The winning Marlin was caught by the same angler that won it last year, with a bigger fish this year. On the first day, one boat did catch one Marlin and two Dorado, but got back to the Marina 10 minutes late (you had to be back in the Marina by 5:00 pm) which had to hurt. The winning anglers are as follows:

Sailfish
1. Jose Font - 113.52 lbs. on the boat Discovery
2. Felipe Quintero - 111.76 lbs. on the boat Jamaica
3. Oscar Amaral - 100.32 lbs. on the boat Terminal

Marlin
1. Clarke Smith - 381.04 lbs. on the boat Prime Time
2. Stefan Kneffel - 379.06 lbs. on the boat J & B
3. Bob Pate - 376.86 lbs. on the boat Damifino

Yellowfin Tuna
1. Jeff Cortes - 174.46 lbs. on the boat Office
2. Oscar Diaz - 131.12 lbs. on the boat Rock & Reel
3. Oscar Diaz - 96.36 lbs. on the boat Rock & Reel

Dorado
1. Rafael Esquivel - 44.22 lbs. on the boat Vita Dura
2. Juan Calderon - 36.74 lbs. on the boat Capriccio
3. Hector Arriaga - 34.76 lbs. on the boat Bella de Mar

The Marlin and the Sailfish were bigger this year than last. Last year's Sailfish was 85.14 lbs. that would of placed 8th place this year. Last year's Marlin was 338.8 lbs. caught by the same angler Clarke Smith, pretty good two years in a row with the same type of fish. Last year's Dorado weighed in at 56.1 lbs, over 10 lbs. more than this year's. Last year's Tuna weighted in at 223.3 lbs. almost 50 lbs. more than last years. So as usual we had a great tournament.

There were 15,000 live bait sold over the course of the tournament and at $10 pesos each, the live bait fishermen are very happy. I'm sure that a lot of anglers will look at some of these weights and say "I can catch bigger than that," well come on and fish next year's tournament. You can find the information at their web site www.fishvallarta.
