email this pageprint this pageemail usHospitality.net

It is the intention of Barceló Hotels & Resorts to consolidate its presence in Mexico, placing the country third in its list in terms of hotels in operation, behind only Spain and the United States.
This luxury hotel, which will now commence trading as the Barceló La Jolla de Mismaloya, is known worldwide as the setting where John Huston directed Ava Gardner and Richard Burton in "The Night of the Iguana."

This new addition, together with that of the Barceló Maya Colonial and the Barceló Maya Tropical, planned for late 2005, will bring to 11 the number of the establishments operated by the chain in Mexico.

Palma de Mallorca, 27 October 2005. Barceló Hotels & Resorts has invested 31 million dollars in the purchase of the prestigious La Jolla de Mismaloya hotel, an exclusive 5-star establishment with 303 suites, set in a magnificent location in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

This luxury hotel, which will now commence trading as the Barceló La Jolla de Mismaloya, was built in 1989 on the site of the sets used by John Huston in 1963 to film one of his most famous films: "The Night of the Iguana". The movie, starring Ava Gardner and Richard Burton , launched onto the world stage a new destination , hitherto almost unknown: Puerto Vallarta. These days the town has become one of Mexico's most famous tourist resorts, every year welcoming more than 2 million visitors.

With this deal, it is the intention of Barceló Hotels & Resorts to consolidate its presence in Mexico, placing the country third in its list in terms of hotels in operation, behind only Spain and the United States. It will also serve to strengthen its offer for the luxury end of the American market with the aim of positioning the Barceló brand at the top end of this niche.

A range of services: 11 Barceló hotels and 3,613 rooms in Mexico

With the purchase of the La Jolla de Mismaloya, and the opening before the year is out of the Barceló Maya Colonial and Barceló Maya Tropical, both on the Riviera Maya, the Mallorca-based chain brings to 11 the number of hotels which it operates in Mexico. It also represents the addition of a new destination, Puerto Vallarta, to those it currently offers in the country, Cancún; Riviera Maya; Ixtapa; Huatulco; Cuernavaca and Aguascalientes.

Barceló La Jolla de Mismaloya: luxury and glamour in Puerto Vallarta

The La Jolla de Mismaloya hotel was built in 1989 on a large part of the sets used in 1963 to film "The Night of the Iguana", the film which shot Puerto Vallarta to fame, and sparked a torrid romance between Ava Gardner and Richard Burton. And so guests can, at what is now the Barceló La Jolla de Mismaloya, enjoy fine Mexican cooking at the Los Sets de la Noche de la Iguana Restaurant , located in what was once the hotel where Ava Gardner stayed in during filming; or at John Huston's Seafood Restaurant (better known as the Casa Huston), along with many other facilities created for the 19 sets where the famous movie was filmed.

Puerto Vallarta is blessed with sunshine almost all year round, with average temperatures of between 24 and 30şC, added to which are its 25 miles of beaches and calm seas. Since "The Night of the Iguana" first made its name, this beautiful coastal town has subsequently been used as a location for many other films. One of the most well-known was 1987's "Predator", starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by John McTiernan.

Barceló Hotels & Resorts, which is the hotel division of Barceló Corporación Empresarial (Barceló Business Corporation), is one of Spain’s leading hotel chains and within the top 30 in the world. It currently has over 112 hotels and more than 28,000 rooms in 12 countries. The chain offers resort and city hotels trading under the brands Barceló Premium (top category), Barceló (medium-high) and Barceló Comfort (economy hotels).
