Cárdenas Tentatively Backs López Obrador Bloomberg
| López Obrador and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas | The spiritual leader of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, offered support, though less than wholeheartedly enthusiastic, for fellow PRD member and erstwhile rival for the party's presidential nomination, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
At a rally in support of Jesús Ortega's bid for mayor of Mexico City, Cárdenas underscored that he represents the genuine PRD, but did not rule out the possibility of collaborating with a fellow party member, including López Obrador, the uncontested aspirant for the party's nomination.
López Obrador is the frontrunner in presidential preference polls in the run-up to the July 2, 2006, election.
"I am not seeking a bureaucratic job, but I will cooperate ... with any citizen with a plan for democratic change for our government," Cárdenas said in reply to an EFE question.
On July 6, Cárdenas gave up his bid for the PRD's nomination, saying the party was more focused on people than on political programs that would solve Mexico's problems.
His stepping down cleared the way for López Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City.
In his speech to rally attendees, Cárdenas called for party unity and defense of the principles that led to its founding in 1989.
Cárdenas has made three unsuccessful bids for the presidency. In the first, in 1988, many claim he actually beat Carlos Salinas de Gortari but rampant fraud denied him the victory.
López Obrador did not attend the rally. He apparently supports the mayoral candidacy of his former public safety and social development secretary, Marcelo Ebrard. |
