Mexican Presidential Candidate Pledges to Open Up Nafta CBC News
| 2006 Presidential contender Roberto Madrazo | Mexico's opposition leader says he will renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement if he is elected president next year.
Roberto Madrazo said that the agreement among Canada, the United States and Mexico needs improvements to help Mexican farmers.
He said heavy agricultural subsidies in Canada and the U.S. are unfair because Mexican farmers receive little financial support from their government.
"It's clear that what is needed is a revision of the section on agriculture in the free trade deal," Madrazo said while debating a minor competitor within his Institutional Revolutionary Party.
While Madrazo is a strong contender for president, left-wing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has the lead in opinion polls. But because he has little support among business leaders, analysts expect a tight three-way race among President Vicente Fox's former energy minister Felipe Calderon, Lopez Obrador and Madrazo. Mexican law bans Fox from running again.
Madrazo is a former governor of Mexico's oil-rich state of Tabasco. While he's described in media reports as a "heavyweight figure" in his party, he's also associated with the party's corrupt and authoritarian old guard. |
