Americas Summit Incites Continued Rancor
email this pageprint this pageemail usFernando Marino-Aguirre - Kalonik

Argentine President Nestor Kirchner, left, and Mexico's Vincente Fox listen to discussions during the Summit of the Americas in Mar del Plata, Argentina, late last week.
President Vicente Fox of Mexico said on Nov. 7 that Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona "does not have a good brain to speak with because he said many foolish things."

Fox, speaking to Mexico's W Radio, was referring to Maradona's statements during the People's Summit last Saturday in Mar del Plata, Argentina, when he described George Bush as "human trash."

The position Fox took at the Summit of the Americas to establish a date to resume negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) failed due to opposition from countries that support the Common Market of the South (CMS), headed by President Nestor Kirchner of Argentina.

The Mexican president blamed his Argentine counterpart for "worrying to please the Argentine people more than ensuring the success of the encounter." Fox added, "It seems to me that the host country has a responsibility to make the summit successful."

The Argentine government is now considering whether or not to respond to Fox's statements.

Meanwhile, an important adviser to President Lula da Silva of Brazil - Marco Aurelio Garcia - said that the summit's result was excellent, and that "the thesis prevailed," referring to issues raised by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, which will discussed at the World Trade Organization (WTO) talks in Hong Kong, Dec. 13-18.

It is expected that in the coming days American presidents will continue adjusting their positions in the wake of the troublesome summit.

On the other hand, Maradona, in Argentina Monday, concluded his successful TV show "La Noche del 10" without reference to Fox. Instead, he held an interview with Cuban leader Fidel Castro made days ago in Havana, Cuba in the presence of approximately 5,000 live spectators.
