There is No "I" in TEAM

Some athletes learn the easy way, others learn the hard way, or not at all.

Shaquile has learned the easy way. Keep your mouth shut and go about your business. Shaq played several years with the Los Angeles Lakers, sharing the spotlight somewhat reluctantly with boy wizard Toby Bryant. Shaq wanted out of L.A., despite ready access to the world of glamour and instant commercials.

He traded in a 30 million dollar contract when he was traded to Miami. He renegotiated a 10 year 20 million a year deal, saving some room at the salary cap for other players. The new contract allows for an adequate style of living in spite of the rigors of Miami Beach. It takes at least an hour to explore his new home.

Terrell Owens appears to be learning the hard way, or perhaps, not at all. He was the star wideout for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football league. It was not unusual for him to catch more footballs than the entire rest of the team. He has had a running feud with his quarterback, McNabb since time began. He has said unfavorable things about the entire organization. He was repeatedly warned by Coach Reid to button up.

My team is the Washington Redskins. Even with the return of Coach Joe Gibbs this season, they are struggling to return to the glory days of the Super Bowl "Hogs." Well, Washington played Philadelphia this past Monday night. Even with Owens suspended from play, Philadelphia should have won. They didn't. A last second pass from quarterback McNabb went errant. Perhaps his ears were ringing with T.Owens latest disrespectful comments that the Eagles would be better off with Green Bay's quarterback Brett Favre, even though they have been completely derailed with a 1-7 record.

T.Owens has always wanted a long term multimillion dollars contract the likes of which Shaq has garnered. No such luck. He was allegedly seen painting a sign, "Rent me for the season, or for one game." The rose has lost its flavor. Owens will sit out the next four games and then be de-activated. Kind of like being captured and sent back to death row. At least as far as athletes go. He has called for a press conference, perhaps to add another feeble apology. But the axiom "What you are speaks so loudly, I cant hear what you are saying" seems to be ringing in everyone's ears.

There is no "I" in team. The only I around is the one in Indianapolis. They are the only undefeated team in the NFL. They have an extremely unselfish quarterback, a uniter. Owens should sit up and take notice. Or, lay down if necessary. He had the world at his feet, but it is too late now. Nobody likes smelly feet.
