Mexican Sports Chief Lauds Colombia's CAG Preparations chinaview.cn
Jesus Moreno, head of Mexico's Central American Games team, on Tuesday told local press that host Colombia is on to right track to next July's regional games.
Moreno had headed up a team of Mexican sports leaders which visited Cartegena on Colombia's Caribbean coast and said that the organizers were professional and ready to take on some of the highest level competition in the world.
"Some facilities are already ready others are in a very advanced stage. The only problem is the althetics stadium. Work will begin on Jan. 15, but they have still got item for finish in time," he said.
Mexico won the previous Central American Games, making good use of the absense of Cuba. Now the country is hoping to end in second place: a difficult feat considering all the support the Venezuelan team has recieved, and the fact that Colombia will be playing on their home territory.
"The temperature there will be between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius, with a humidity of around 92 percent. That is a very tough climate for Mexicans, so trainers have to prepare the athletes for this," he said.
Regarding the disciplines that are at risk of not being part of the Cartagena competition, Moreno said that nearly all were already set out in the program: including 50 meter swimming races, the marathon, the 10,000 meters for women in the athletics.
"One discipline that is uncertain is rowing, but there are several countries, that are keen to compete and maybe Santo Domingo could be an alternative venue," he said.
Although Cartagena is the main site for the competition, Bogota will host the equestrian competitions while Barranquilla will host cycling, shooting, bowling, rowing and water skiing. The Domincan Republic will host badminton, hockey, handball, raquetball and modern pentathlon competitions. |
