Women Threaten Mexican Machismo Prensa Latina
| "No, to machismo! No, to domestic violence!" (W.E. Gutman) | The news coming from the eastern state of Vera Cruz in Mexico caused so much surprise it made headlines in a country where machismo is practically the norm: many men are victims of women´s aggression.
Between January and October 2005, 56 men have reported physical or psychological attacks by their partners to the Sexual and Family Crimes Ministry.
Violence in the family not only affects women and children, men are also victims and most of the time they do not make it public because of the machismo character of Mexican society, La Jornada newspaper published.
Lutgarda Madrigal, head of the Crime Victims Attention Center in Vera Cruz gave an example of a 23-year-old man whose 18-year-old wife "beats him with a stick or a belt and has him so dominated" that when neighbors called authorities he refused to press charges.
This year authorities have received complaints from 9,000 people, 25 percent of them from men, but according to Madrigal, the problem is much greater because only two or three out of 10 women press charges. |
