Acapulco - Mexican authorities are investigating a shootout between police and alleged drug traffickers that left four of the suspects dead.

It happened yesterday in the resort city of Acapulco.

The confrontation began after police received a complaint that three Jeeps carrying heavily armed men in military-style uniforms were headed toward a popular tourist area.

When police arrived, the jeeps sped off.

During the chase, the occupants began throwing their weapons out of the windows and even discarded their bulletproof vests.

Police say it ended when one of the assailants tried to throw a hand grenade but it exploded inside the jeep, setting it on fire and detonating ammunition.

Four of the suspects were killed and three were captured, including two who fled into a nearby church.
