Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) leader Marcos turned his criticism on the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) in a rally in Chiapas on Thursday.

The EZLN launched a national tour on New Year´s Day for what they call "The Other Campaign," which coincides with the presidential election campaigns and aims to call attention to the plight of indigenous communities.

Marcos accused PRD presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador of trying to coopt poor farmers in exchange for water. He also said López Obrador has surrounded himself with allies of former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, a controversial figure from the rival Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

PRD supporters in the audience questioned Marcos, saying "people are saying that the EZLN is a cheerleader for the government," implying that Marcos´ criticisms of the PRD could serve the rival National Action Party (PAN) which now holds the presidency.

Marcos responded: "He (López Obrador) is not from the left and he has said so repeatedly ... You can fool yourselves and say now we will win the presidency, but in one or two years, you will say: he wasn´t so good after all."
