Mexicans Commemorate Third Anniversary of Deadly New Year's Eve Fireworks Explosion In Veracruz Associated Press
Veracruz, Mexico – Residents of this Gulf coast city this weekend commemorated with a religious service the third anniversary of a deadly fireworks New Year's Eve fireworks explosion that killed 29 people.
The 2002 tragedy happened in the Miguel Hidalgo market when a spark from an undetermined source set off a chain of explosions at stands where fireworks were being sold illegally.
Officials subsequently cracked down on illegal fireworks sales and strengthened local regulations governing the legal use and sale of the explosives.
Fireworks are used widely in Mexico to celebrate everything from Independence Day to Christmas and New Year's. The Veracruz explosion was neither the first, nor the deadliest fireworks tragedy in Mexico.
In 1999, 4 metric tons (4.4 U.S. tons) of illegally stored fireworks and gunpowder exploded in the central state of Guanajuato, killing 63 people. In 1988, at least 68 people were killed in a fireworks explosion in Mexico City's sprawling La Merced central market. |
