Puerto Vallarta Festival Indigena Wixaritari - Tatei Kie
email this pageprint this pageemail usPVNN

Offering the world a glimpse into the rich ancesteral customs and cultures of Mexico, the first annual Festival Indigena Wixaritari - Tatei Kie is scheduled to take place at Plaza Caracol in Puerto Vallarta from March 4th-26th.
The Huichol [wee-chole], known as Huicholes in Spanish and Wixaritari in their own language, are part of an indigenous community that has existed in Mexico for at least 1000 years.

Though recognized as one of the Mexican native cultures most resilient to outside influences, twenty-five years ago, the dream of creating a community project that offers visitors a place where they can learn about the everyday life of the Wixaritari was born.

In 2004, the common assembly authorized the development of "eculturismo" a tourist activity designed to increase public awareness of the cultural and artistic life of the Wixaritari, while creating jobs in the Huichol community.

Today, the project has become a reality. In January of 2006, with the support of La Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas, or the CDI, [the National Commission for the Development of Native Towns,] the Huicholes completed the construction of the first Center of Wixaritari Native Art in the region.

In celebration, Plaza Caracol in the Puerto Vallarta hotel zone will be hosting the first Festival Indigena Wixaritari from March 4th-26th, offering everyone the opportunity to sample the richness of this ancient tribe and to learn more about the age-old customs of the Huichol people through traditional cultural demonstrations such as:

• Wixarika Art Exhibits
• Traditional and Regional Music
• Wixaritari Dance and Song Rituals
• Traditional Ceremonies
• Photographs
• Movies and Video
• Work Conferences
• Cultural and Academic Forums

The festival also presents an opportunity for the promotion of the Eculturismo Tatei Kie project as a common effort to fortify the development of the Huichol community through the creation of jobs, the care of the environment and the artistic and cultural patrimony of future generations to avoid the migration of the Wixaritari people.

Don't miss your chance to catch a glimpse of the rich ancesteral customs and cultures of Mexico at the first annual Festival Indigena Wixaritari to be held at Plaza Caracol in Puerto Vallarta from March 4th-26th.
