Mexican Solidarity with Cuba Increased Prensa Latina
| Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez (R) said Monday the government is looking into possible sanctions against a U.S.-owned hotel if officials conclude it expelled Cuban guests because of their nationality or because of pressure from the U.S. government. (Reuters/Henry Romero) | Mexico City - The Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MMSC) announced on Wednesday new demonstrations to support the Cuban people in view of the application of US anti-Cuban laws here.
Jesus Escamillas, from MMSC National Coordinating Committee, cited a rally to be held outside the Foreign Ministry on Thursday afternoon.
Demonstrators will demand Foreign Minister Ernesto Derbez' resignation in view of the weak government response to the latest US interference in Mexican affairs, he said.
The Mexican people are demanding a clear, categorical response, and they are not willing to allow our sovereignty to be violated and undermined, he stressed.
On Tuesday, MMSC started demonstrations against US anti-Cuban policy by symbolically closing the Sheraton Maria Isabel Hotel, in downtown Mexico City.
Last Friday, the hotel managers followed US Treasury Department's orders to expel a Cuban delegation who was attending a meeting with US business people.
This extraterritorial application of US laws and blockade against Cuba in Mexico is a flagrant, offensive violation of our national sovereignty, a MMSC statement said.
Under Mexican law, Mexico-based foreign companies are required to comply only and exclusively with Mexican regulations, the text added.
About one hundred representatives of organizations grouped within MMSC met in the Mexican capital on Tuesday in order to coordinate new actions to defend national sovereignty and support the Cuban people.
Their stands were ratified in passionate speeches delivered by attendees, with some of them demanding the closure of the Sheraton Maria Isabel Hotel. |
