Mexican Leader Fox Still Popular Despite Criticism Reuters

He has swapped his cowboy boots for soft shoes and his bushy mustache has grayed, but on his whirlwind tours of Mexico, President Fox looks little changed from the candidate he was six years ago. (Eliseo Fernandez/Reuters) | Mexico City - Mexican President Vicente Fox remains popular despite criticism from the left that he is interfering in this year's election to choose his successor, a poll in the El Universal newspaper showed.
The survey gave Fox a 66 percent approval rating, down from 68 percent in a poll by the daily last November but still one of his highest scores in recent years.
Leftist front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has accused Fox of breaking the Mexican presidential tradition of impartiality during elections by backing the candidacy of Felipe Calderon, from the ruling National Action Party.
The government denies it is voicing support for conservative Calderon, in second place in opinion polls.
Fox ended 71 years of one-party rule when he ousted the Institutional Revolutionary Party at elections in 2000, but economic growth has been slower than he promised.
However, Fox is seen as honest and wins many over with his affable manner. He is not allowed to run for president again under Mexico's constitution. |
