For some it was competitive due to the cash prizes and pride and for others it was a healthy fun run. The rock music that blasted out of the speakers early in the morning was not from the clubs emptying out from Saturday night, but to help energize the group of competitors that awoke early Sunday morning.
There were three classifications based on age and sex. The Open or "Libre" division was for those under 29 years of age or those aiming for the top prize of 5000 pesos. The other divisions were the 30-39, 40-49 and Masters division, for over 50 competitors. Men and women were split into separate divisions, allowing for eight competitive races.
The route started at the Sports Stadium and reached the Holiday Inn where the runners turned back and returned to the stadium and ran the same course again for the second lap, completing the 10K. All traffic in the center lanes was stopped until about 10AM, permitting the competitors a safe run. Runners were local, national and international in quite an interesting field. Many people came from Guadalajara to compete, among other states in Mexico and there were quite a few North American English speaking folks out as well.
One runner stole the show, as Kenya's Bernard Kimwetick Songova stole the show, finishing the 10K (6.2 miles) in just 30 minutes and 25 seconds, almost three minutes better than the runner-up and was awarded a trophy and 5000 pesos. Rosalba Gudiño Gonzalez of Guadalajara won the women's 30-39 with a time of 35.38.
Other winners included in the 30-39 men's division, Juan Carlos Kazo of Puerto Vallarta who ran the course in 31.12; while Martha Dila Rosa Copado of Tepic took top honors for the women, winning in 40.20. Both runners picked up 3000 pesos along with their medals.
In the 40-49 year old men's division, Roman Garcia Ruiz of Mochis, Sinaloa ran first with a time of 32.30, while Laura Patricia Famoso Baez of Puerto Vallarta took top honors for the women, winning in 43.17. They also were awarded a 3000 peso first prize. Only the men ran in the over 50 division and Juan Figueroa Ponce of Guadalajara ran a spectacular race for the "old guys" with a time of 35.52. |
