Puerto Vallarta - If you have problems with your plants, you won't want to miss the Vallarta Orchid Society's free lecture on "Plants with Problems" this Sunday, June 25th at 1 pm in the Vallarta Botanical Gardens.

This talk, the fifth in a series of lectures presented by the Vallarta Orchid Society, will not only address problem orchids, but will also help you find solutions for all of your "Plants with Problems."

The problems can be the result of too much water or too little water, chemical or fertilizer imbalance, too little or too much sun, diseases or pests. Since Summer is upon us, it is important to know how to protect your precious plants, both during the dry season and the upcoming rainy season.

Diseases and pests (bugs) are common problems that both need specific control and prevention procedures. There are a number of chemicals and "natural" methods of dealing with pests, and many of these will be discussed in terms the average person can understand.

Orchids and other beautiful plants need a specific regimen of fertilizing. Giving them the wrong type of nourishment can be harmful. This subject will be also discussed.

Bringing "problem plants" to this meeting may be difficult because of the agricultural inspection station on the highway. Instead, people are invited to bring photos and descriptions of their problems to share with others and seek solutions.

The Vallarta Orchid Society is open to anyone with an interest in orchids. These series of talks are designed to educate and enlighten, without getting into too much technical and scientific detail.

The Botanical Gardens are home to a large (and growing) collection of plants that are indigenous to Puerto Vallarta and the Banderas Bay area, a restaurant, a swimming hole in the river, and shade houses where young plants get their start.

The gardens are located 24 Km south of town, just 3 Km past Chico’s Paradise. The bus to El Tuito will stop at the entrance to the Gardens, and will return you to town. Admission to the Gardens is free, as are the talks.
