Mexican Tourism Revenue at $1.07 Bln April 2006 AII Data Processing Ltd
| Mexico attracted 22 million foreign tourists in 2005. | Mexico registered a tourism revenue of $1.074 bln (853.51 mln euro) in April 2006, up 4.62 pct year-on-year, the central bank, Banco de Mexico (Banxico), said on June 19, 2006.
The result, registered in April 2006, represented the first year-on-year increase for a month in the last six months. Mexico was strongly affected by hurricane Wilma, which hit some of the main tourist resorts in the country in October 2005.
A total 1,844,000 foreign tourists visited the Latin American country in the fourth month of 2006, up 3.79 pct year-on-year. The number of tourists, who came to Mexico aboard cruise ships, decreased 14.7 pct.
Mexican tourism revenue totalled $4.325 bln (3.44 bln euro) from January to April 2006, down 3.16 pct in comparison with the same period a year ago. A total 7.37 million tourists visited Mexico during the first four months of 2006, down 2.17 pct.
The Mexican tourism sector is expected to fully recover from Wilma in the second half of 2006, when the majority of the damaged hotels in Cancun and Cozumel will resume operations according to the Ministry of Tourism. Only 70 pct of the hotels in Cancun are operating at present.
Tourists have increased their visits to alternative tourism destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Mazatlan, the ministry added.
