2 Security Guards for Acapulco Mayor Slain AP
| Mexican authorities on Thursday identified the bodies of two slain men found inside a luxury vehicle in this Pacific coast resort as military officers in charge of the mayor's security. (AP/Gonzalo Perez) | Two men slain during a wave of drug-related violence in this resort city were identified Thursday as military officers responsible for the mayor's security.
The men, whose bodies were found inside a luxury vehicle Wednesday night, had been beaten and suffocated, said Enrique Gil Mercado, a special prosecutor with the attorney general's office for Guerrero state.
Acapulco, a Pacific resort 180 miles southwest of Mexico City, has been shaken this year by more than a dozen high-profile gun slayings as well as several grenade attacks on police stations.
Federal investigators link the violence to a turf war between drug gangs in northern Mexico for lucrative smuggling routes into the United States.
Mayor Felix Salgado said he would lead a march against violence this weekend.
"Our society is disgusted by these events," he said. |
