Gunmen Kill 4 During Theft at Mexican Lab AP
| An injured security guard is taken away by paramedics after gunmen raided a pharmaceutical laboratory in Mexico City, early Monday July 24, 2006, killing four security guards and stealing about a ton of ephedrine, a key ingredient in the production of methamphetamine. (AP) | Gunmen raided a pharmaceutical laboratory in Mexico's capital early Monday, killing four guards and stealing about a ton of ephedrine, a key ingredient in making methamphetamine, officials said.
The guards at Medix Laboratories were shot after being tied up, said Bernardo Batiz, Mexico City's district attorney. A fifth guard was wounded but survived.
Batiz told reporters that the gunmen stole 40 containers, each holding 55 pounds of ephedrine.
"It's very probable this was the work of groups dedicated to selling drugs," Batiz said.
Investigators say so-called super labs throughout Mexico produce large amounts of methamphetamine that are then smuggled into California and other parts of the U.S. for sale on the street. Mexican Judge Adds 168 Years to Sentence AP
One of Mexico's most feared kidnappers known as "the ear-lopper" was slapped with an additional 168-year sentence on top of the 80 years he is already serving for organized crime and abduction, officials said Monday.
Former police officer Daniel Arizmendi led a kidnapping gang with reputation for cutting off the ears of some of its victims and sending them to the families to pressure them for ransom, the Mexican attorney general's office said in a news release.
The extra sentence was for four kidnappings carried out between 1995 and 1997, it said. Arizmendi was arrested in 1998. |
