Mexico's Left Rules out Violence in Election Fight Reuters

Mexico's leftist coalition called on its supporters Friday to turn out nationwide to protest the vote count that showed conservative Felipe Calderon winning the presidential election. (AP/Gregory Bull) | Mexico's leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will not use violence in his fight to have the bitterly contested election result overturned in his favor, a senior aide said on Friday.
He also said Lopez Obrador, who was a very close second place in official results from last Sunday's election, would accept the final ruling of Mexico's election court once his legal challenges have been reviewed.
"Everything we do will be peaceful," said the senior aide, Ricardo Monreal. "We have never used violence and we never will."
Official election results gave conservative ruling party candidate Felipe Calderon a razor-thin victory but Lopez Obrador says the vote was riddled with irregularities and has vowed to challenge the result before the electoral court, which has the final say. |
