(AFP/Kimberlee Hewitt) | US President George W. Bush telephoned Mexican President Vicente Fox and his apparent successor Felipe Calderon and vowed to work with Mexico on key issues, the White House said.
"The president called president Fox to congratulate him on his record of accomplishment as president of Mexico," and said he hoped to see Fox before Fox leaves office, said Bush spokesman Tony Snow.
Bush also telephoned Calderon "to congratulate him on his hard-won victory and to tell him that he looked forward to working with him on isssues of mutual interest," said Snow.
The conservative Calderon, 43, faces major challenges after his victory in Mexico's closest presidential election ever, which his leftist rival wants to reverse in court.
Calderon garnered almost 36 percent of the vote and a lead of just under 0.6 percentage points over Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who insisted the process was marred by irregularities and demanded a complete recount of the 42 million ballots.
Authorities announced on Thursday that Calderon, of the ruling National Action Party (PAN), had the most votes, though he won't be formally proclaimed president-elect until the Federal Electoral Tribunal has considered any legal challenges. |
