XXII Copa Canto Del Sol Completes Successful Tournament Bob Cohen - PVNN
· Navarro Wins Title at XXII Copa
The final rounds of competition in the Mens, Womens, Youth and Doubles categories of the XXII Annual Copa Canto Del Sol Tennis Tournament were played Saturday at the Canto del Sol Tennis Resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Kudos go out to Canto Del Sol Tennis Director Martin Parra and his staff of Polo Torres, Polo Martinez, Leonardo "Chino" Lopez and Jesus Martinez. Manuel Martinez Flores, the President of the Jalisco Association of Tennis, and Association Supervisor, Hector Martinez, were present at the event all week long.
Hector, who had the difficult task of rescheduling matches due to the loss of the four clay courts each day from afternoon rains, was perhaps the busiest of all.
Most early round matches were scheduled beginning at 5 pm and when the downpours arrived; Hector had to play chess with the four remaining covered hard courts. Some matches were delayed up to five hours from their original start time, but amazingly there was not a complaint to be heard.
Canto Del Sol tennis staff stayed until early hours of the morning to help accommodate participants, and were back to work early the following mornings. For more information about Jalisco tennis, one can visit their website at www.atj.com.mx in order to keep up on Jalisco tennis, and the many friends participating in the Puerto Vallarta event.
Play on Saturday began at 8:00 AM with all singles finals played on all eight courts. It was amazing that the clay courts were dry, as they had at least 4-6 inches of water on them from the storm the evening before.

Highlight player of the overall tournament was Dario Peña of Tepic, who won the 18 Singles and 18 Doubles. Dario, who just recently turned 17 also played into the Professional draw, but was defeated early.
Standing at 6'4, Dario has the makings of a future professional, but needs to play more outside of Tepic where he will face better competition. Dario already dominates play in Tepic and as a member of the Club Britania, recently won the singles and doubles events in their inaugural tournament. He comes from a tennis family and often plays his uncles in tournament play. We will be keeping an eye on Dario's progress and report back to our readers.
The best final match came in the "A" Mens Doubles on Saturday, where the team of Jorge Joya and Raul Lopez defeated Yan Welffens and Emile Larrivee in three grueling sets. It was also the only final that featured all Puerto Vallarta players.
Each set was extremely close and every game seemed to go to deuce at least once. Joya and Lopez won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 4-6 and were down 4-5 in the deciding set, but rallied to take the final three games for the championship. Joya has now won two doubles titles in a row, making him a desired partner for future events.
Overall, Guadalajara players fared the best, notching ten victories and eight second place finishes. Tepic was extremely strong, winning five divisions and finished second in three. Mazatlan was 100%, winning the two finals their competitors played in. Puerto Vallarta players won two and finished second twice. Michioacan had one victory and one second place finish.
It was an exciting week of tennis at the Canto Del Sol, and the club is looking forward to adding more prestigious events in the future. Players had a special request to Tennis Director Martin Parra; try to schedule tournaments in months other than August or September to avoid our common late afternoon rains. But, when all was said and done, the tournament was deemed a huge success. |
