Mexican Leftists Promise Widespread Civil Disobedience Over Alleged Electoral Fraud Associated Press

(AP/Eduardo Verdugo) | Mexico City Supporters of leftist presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Wednesday they will launch a campaign of civil disobedience and lawbreaking across Mexico that could bring the nation to a halt, unless a court orders the a total recount of votes from the July election.
Gerardo Fernandez, a close aide to Lopez Obrador, told reporters the campaign of civil disobedience will begin after a mass meeting on Sept. 16, Mexico's Independence Day, and will include all types of illegal activities that imply a position of rebellion against authorities. Mexico - Opposition leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) reaffirmed that if the apparent electoral fraud is permitted to take place in Mexico, democracy will be nothing but a sham, deteriorated by the institutions decadence and discredit.
Speaking to a cheering crowd, the presidential candidate of Por el Bien de Todos coalition upheld that the imposition of Felipe Calderon, fielded by presently governing PAN (Accion Nacional), would mean a blatant violation of the Constitution.
He convoked all representatives elected in popular assemblies in towns, communities, municipalities and organizations to take part in the National Democratic Convention scheduled for September 16.
Lopez Obrador exhorted his nationwide followers to brainstorm alternatives and actions to take in the event the Electoral Court of the Mexican Judicial Power (TEPJF) proclaims Calderon the victor of the July 2 elections.
Media reports assure that the recount ordered by TEPJF reduced Calderon s lead over AMLO by 6,465 votes.
As a next step, that judicial entity will analyze the presidential vote and the 364 complaints presented by PAN and the alliance before August 31.
Meanwhile, federal PRD deputies (Revolucion Democratica) a major party in the opposition coalition - were injured Monday when security forces evicted supporters from the area around the Legislature, and are holding President Vicente Fox responsible for the excessive use of force in the incident.
The denunciation to the Attorney General also included Public Security Secretary Eduardo Medina, House Speaker Alvaro Elias and Felipe de Jesus Zamora, legal head of the Legislature.
The officials are accused of probable responsibility for the crimes of violating constitutional rights, aggravated injuries and abuse of authority.
Facing this event, the Federal Public Ministry launched an investigation in which coalition supporters will appear to present more charges against the officials.
Since July 30, followers of the Por el Bien de Todos coalition of Lopez Obrador have installed camps on the streets and squares of the nation in peaceful civil resistance against the ostensible electoral fraud. |
