Social Explosion Unlikely: Spokesman Xinhua

(AP/Arturo Pena-Romano) | Mexico City - A Mexican government spokesman dismissed suggestions on Thursday that a social explosion would follow the Electoral Tribunal's ruling on the country's contested July 2 election, due within a week.
This is highly unlikely to happen even if the Tribunal nominates Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, of the ruling National Action Party, president-elect, Presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar Valenzuela said.
Left-wing candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, of the Revolutionary Democratic Party, has rejected the election result published by the Federal Electoral Agency, which showed Calderon beating Obrador by a slim advantage of 0.58 percentage point.
Obrador said he will not recognize a "usurper" president, and will continue his protracted street campaign which he says is a "peaceful civil resistance," but has blocked three of Mexico City's most important streets and the capital city's main square.
The Mexican Electoral Tribunal is due to rule on the disputed election by Aug. 31, and to formally name a president-elect by Sept. 6. |
