US House Republicans Push New Vote on Mexican Border Fence
email this pageprint this pageemail usAssociated Press

On the Mexican side of the border fence between Agua Prieta, Mexico and Douglas, Arizona, crosses are placed to represent people who died trying to enter the U.S. illegally. On average, one person dies trying to cross the border illegally every day. And every day, six more are rescued by the border patrol.
Washington – House Republicans seeking to get tough on illegal immigration plan a new vote today on a border fence proposal.

The bill calls for building more than 700 miles of double-layered fencing along the nearly 2,000-mile border with Mexico.

The House approved the same amount of fencing when it passed its enforcement-focused immigration overhaul bill last December.

An aide to House Majority Leader John Boehner says House leaders see fence construction as a border security issue that needs immediate attention.

Additional border security measures are also expected to be unveiled tomorrow.

The Senate in May approved a broader immigration bill that proposed construction of 370 miles of fencing. The border now has 75 miles of fencing.

The two chambers have yet to negotiate a comprehensive bill sought by President Bush.
