400-Foot Tunnel Discovered at US-Mexico Border AP
| Last January, a 2,400-foot-long tunnel was discovered by federal agents that ran from a warehouse near Tijuana's airport to this Otay Mesa warehouse. (John R. Mccutchen/Union-Tribune) | San Diego, Calif. - A 400-foot tunnel was discovered Monday in Southern California along the U.S.-Mexico border that authorities believe was used to funnel drugs between the two countries.
Federal officials said the secret passage connected a home in Calexico, Calif., to another house, 400 feet away, in Mexicali, Mexico.
Officials said the tunnel is about 20 feet underground and is equipped with lighting and supported by wooden beams.
Drug Enforcement Administration agent John Fernandes is calling the discovery "evidence of the desperation that drug traffickers are feeling" in the face of U.S. efforts to keep drugs out of the country.
There's no word yet on whether anyone was arrested or who was responsible for the tunnel.
The passage is one of some 40 secret tunnels discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border over the past five years, according to authorities. |
