US Congratulates Mexico's Calderon On Win AFP

Felipe Calderon became president-elect of Mexico on Tuesday, two months after disputed elections, when the nation's top electoral court voted unanimously to reject allegations of fraud and certify his narrow victory. (AP/Dario Lopez-Mills) | The United States congratulated conservative Felipe Calderon on being formally declared president-elect of Mexico and said it looked forward to "broad, deep and productive" relations.
"We congratulate Felipe Calderon on his victory, and look forward to working with him and his team," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said after Mexico's top electoral tribunal ruled Calderon had won.
"We expect our relationship with Mexico to continue to be broad, deep, and productive for both our countries under the administration of President-elect Calderon," Perino said.
Calderon's leftist rival, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has already made it clear he would not recognize the ruling by the top electoral court, which rejected claims massive fraud had marred the July 2 election.
"We congratulate the people of Mexico on the certification of a free and fair electoral process that was finalized on September 5," said Perino.
"Mexico's democratic institutions, especially the Federal Institute of Elections and Electoral Tribunal, proved themselves strong and capable in reflecting the will of the people of Mexico. We note that the Tribunals' decision was unanimous," she said. |
