The Puerto Vallarta Half Marathon and 5K will be run on Sunday, November 5, 2006 with a start time of 6:50 AM. The 5K will start 10 minutes later at 7:00 AM.

The course will begin at the Municipal Sports Stadium across from the Sheraton Hotel and will continue north on Francisco Medina Ascensio Avenue, passing Plaza Caracol, the Rio del Pitillal Bridge, the cruise ship marina, Plaza marina, the international airport and will turn back on the Crucero de las Juntas and return back on the same route.

There will be an open division (ages 18-39) for the competitors that will be running for a cash purse totaling $170,000 pesos. Also, there will be a Masters A (40-49 years old), Masters B (50-59) and Master C (60 and above). Cash prizes will be awarded in each division for top finishers.

Last year, Kenyan competitors ran first, second and third, with winner Lenard Hgigi Njengiwas running the race an incredible 1 hour, 5 minutes and 3 seconds, defeating the 2nd place finisher by only 2 seconds in a thrilling finish. Third place was another 1 minute, 49 seconds back. The women's open division champ was also a Kenyan. Lucy Muhami covered the course in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 37 seconds.

The second place finisher was Margarita Reynoso Vasquez of Guadalajara who ran the half marathon in 1:28:12, almost nine minutes behind the champion. Two local Puerto Vallarta female Veteran runners finished second and third last year in that division.

The 5K is more of a "fun run" and a large crowd is expected to compete. The deadline for registration is on Saturday, November 4th, the day before the race. One can register at the Municipal Sport Center Stadium until then. Entry fees are $20 USD per person, that includes a T shirt and medal to the first 1000 half marathon and 5K finishers.

The weather should be ideal for the runners and early morning temperatures should range between 65-70 degrees at the race start. The evening before the race will offer a Tropical Pasta Dinner in a private yacht for those that wish to carbo-load prior to the race. The cost is only $6 USD per person and only 500 seats will be sold.

Come out early Sunday morning and enjoy the competition and camaraderie of the athletes running for the purses along with those that want the experience of the event.
