Election Court Upholds Victory

Election court upholds the victory of Juan Sabines Guerrero in Chiapas.
The Federal Electoral Tribunal (Trife) on Friday ratified the victory of the leftist coalition candidate in the Aug. 20 Chiapas gubernatorial election.

"We confirm the declaration of the validity of the election and the awarding of a majority in favor of Juan José Sabines," Trife president Leonel del Castillo said.

The Trife 10 days ago ordered a re-tallying of the ballots from 184 of the 499 Chiapas polling places where the results had been challenged by the alliance led by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and its candidate, José Antonio Aguilar.

Formato 21 radio reported that Trife found evidence of irregularities at only two precincts.

Sabines, supported by the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and two smaller parties, triumphed by a margin of 6,195 votes (544,062 to 537, 867) out of more than 1 million cast in the poor southern state.

Aguilar challenged the outcome and its appeal eventually reached the Trife, whose decision to order the partial recount brought an angry response from the PRD.

The recount reduced Sabines´ vote total by 985 votes, while Aguilar´s total declined by 892.

Sabines joined the PRD coalition after the PRI overlooked him and imposed Aguilar as the gubernatorial nominee. Sabines had been the mayor of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

His popularity was such that many state PRI officials and several standing PRI mayors bucked the "imposition" of Aguilar by the party headquarters in Mexico City and overtly supported Sabines´ candidacy.

During a Friday afternoon news conference in Mexico City, Sabines said that he intends to establish "a strong institutional relationship" with President-elect Felipe Calderón.
