Mexico, Jamaica Qualify for Barbados World Cup

Mexico and Jamaica booked their places at December's World Cup in Barbados after finishing first and second at the Nations Cup qualifying tournament in Aruba on Sunday.
Mexican duo Esteban Toledo and Octavio Gonzalez headed the field at eight-under-par 276 after firing a one-under 70 on the final day of foursomes at a blustery Tierra del Sol Golf Club.
Jamaica's Peter Horrobin and Delroy Cambridge, who finished level with Venezuela's Carlos Larrain and Miguel Martinez at six under, clinched the final spot for Barbados after winning a two-hole playoff.
Horrobin and Cambridge produced the best foursomes round of the day with a sparkling 67 that featured seven birdies.
Overnight leaders Paraguay, represented by Marco Ruiz and Fabrizio Zanotti, had to settle for fourth place at four-under 280 after dropping three shots over the last two holes for a 76.
"With all teams preparing better each year, the task of making it to the World Cup is a difficult one," Gonzalez told reporters.
"We are very happy about our success this week. But it was tough, especially with the wind blowing as strong as it did every day," added the Mexican, who made his World Cup debut in Malaysia in 1999.
Horrobin, who also played at the 1999 World Cup won by U.S. duo Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara, was elated after Jamaica's rousing performance in the last-day foursomes.
"This is the greatest feeling of them all, to represent your country in a world-class competition," he said. "I'm so happy we made it."
The 24-team World Cup will take place from Dec. 7-10 at The Sandy Lane Resort, Barbados.
Welsh pairing Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd will defend the title they won by two strokes last year in Portugal. |
