White House to Welcome Calderon AFP
| "I understand the right of every country to determine its security and protect its territory, but two such clearly and inevitably complementary economies cannot be separated with a wall," said Calderon. | US President George W. Bush will welcome Mexico's president-elect Felipe Calderon on November 9 for wide-ranging talks, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
"Mexico is an important hemispheric partner of the United States, and the President looks forward to meeting with President-elect Calderon prior to his inauguration on December 1," Snow said.
"President Bush and President-elect Calderon will discuss a range of global, regional, and bilateral issues, including ways to strengthen cooperation between the United States and Mexico, and enhance competitiveness, free trade, economic growth, and security in North America," said Snow.
The meeting comes amid US-Mexico tensions on a range of issues, including the US Congress's vote in favor of erecting a border security fence that supporters say will curb undocumented immigration into the United States.
Speaking at a recent gala press dinner, Calderon cautioned that "neither decree nor physical barrier" will reduce migration across the border.
"I understand the right of every country to determine its security and protect its territory, but two such clearly and inevitably complementary economies cannot be separated with a wall," said Calderon. |
