Sergio Martinez, playing out of the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club won the "A" division early Saturday afternoon, easily defeating Rafael Lobato 6-1, 6-2 in the championship round. The division was played in a round robin format and the young Martinez has already beaten Lobato in the first round 6-2, 6-4. Appearing a bit sad before the match because he wanted to play his brother Roberto in the finals, Sergio played steady, intelligent tennis to take home the trophy in the tournament's inaugural year. Roberto was misinformed of his Friday starting time and had to default his match, knocking him out of the running.

The event drew about 60 players in the A, B, C and D categories. In "B" play, Adrian Renteria had the easiest time of all the finals; his opponent never showed up and Renteria won by default. The "C" division had twenty players, the largest field and was the only category played in traditional format. Hector Zepeda, son of the Sheraton tennis pro easily took his championship trophy, defeating Hector Gonzalez 6-2, 6-0. Zepeda lost only one set the entire tournament and that was to sportswriter Bob Cohen, the only competitor to push him to three sets. Hector, rather new on the local Puerto Vallarta tennis scene will be moving up to "B" in his next event. He is an extremely fast steady player and at 17, will get better and better as time passes.

The "D" division was won by Francisco Javier Robles, 6-2, 6-1 over Javier Diaz, who played in his first ever tournament. That is quite a feat to make it to the finals in ones first event, but he couldn't play equal to the steady game of Robles and settled for the runner-up trophy.

The new Holiday Inn tennis pro Ricardo Mellon kept in the hotel tradition of playing local events, giving Vallarta players a chance to compete in tournament formats. Ricardo is trying to plan a weekly doubles round robin tournament that will take just a few hours to play. Mellon also announced that he will be getting married next month to his fiancée Mayra. We wish you both the best of luck in your future together.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants and we look for more tournaments as tennis players are coming in day by day for the tourist high season.
