Mexican Left Peacefully Block Calderon Prensa Latina
The Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) said Friday that actions planned to impede the transfer of powers on Dec 1 do not include violence.
PRD spokesman Gerardo Fernandez Noroña made that declaration, ratifying that supporters of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will block president-elect Felipe Calderon from taking office.
Fernandez Noroña assured that actions of the Frente Amplio will remain inside the limits of peaceful civil resistance and guarantee integrity of citizens protesting Calderon´s inauguration.
He also noted they will not exchange the coming approval of the PRD legislative agenda in Parliament for a gleaming swearing-in ceremony for the dignitary-elect.
Faced with the opposition position as the power transfer gets closer, the Executive is reinforcing security measures around the Legislative headquarters and urging respect for those who elected Calderon.
According to article 85 of the Constitution, if the president-elect does not appear Dec 1 at the ceremony in Congress, then Mexico will have an acting and not a constitutional head of state. |
