(Reuters) | Seattle - The University of Washington has ended its study-abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico, a week early because of anti-government violence there.
The 17 undergraduates had been living with families and studying at the Oaxaca Cultural Institute since September.
The program was scheduled to end Dec. 8th.
The university decided to evacuate the students after protesters last weekend set fire to government offices and more than 40 people were injured.
No UW students have been hurt.
Nine students are to leave Puebla for Seattle tomorrow.
The remaining eight will stay in Mexico to travel on their own.
The university has sent students to Oaxaca for about 12 years. The program runs only in the Fall.
Tony Geist, chairman of the school's Spanish and Portuguese department, says it's expected that students will return next year. |
