| More entertainment by Puerto Vallarta entertainers between fights during the evening. | Coming off the heels of the popular "Quadrangular" event, Carlos Solorio assembled yet another superb Muay Thai card last Saturday night at Club Collage, bringing in fighters from Mexico City for an exciting event entitled "Vallarta vs D.F."
Solorio, who is the professor and owner of the Lanna Gym in Puerto Vallarta has become quite the promoter, and will make his return to the ring in January.
There were nine fights on the Saturday night card, six amateur and three professional. As is the norm for a Solorio event all fights except the main event had a Lanna Gym fighter in each bout. All opponents came from both Guadalajara and Mexico City and form the first bout, all fights were extremely competitive.
In the features amateur fight, Solorio's younger 17 year old brother Hugo faced off against Daniel "El Pony" Villegas for Mexico City. Hugo started at his normal slow first round pace and won the opening round with calculating kicks and punches.
The second round, the round that Solorio generally dominates, opened with Hugo on the attack, but a quick, hard kick by Villegas caught the youngster in the ankle as he dropped to the canvas injured. He collected himself, his leg gear put back on by his corner, but as he was ready to again do battle, the fight was called by referee Aramando Tapia.
It was Solorio's first defeat after a long winning streak, losing the fight to injury, while ahead on the judge's scorecards. Look for more from Hugo; in 2007, he should be turning to the professional ranks.
The first pro bout pitted Lanna Gym's Eder "Thai" Huerta against Alan Vargas of Mexico City. Vargas had the punching power but Eder connected repeatedly with hard, precise kicks. After three rounds of punishment inflicted by the Vallarta fighter, his opponent didn't come out of his corner for the 4th round of the scheduled five round bout, giving the TKO victory to Huerta.
A real treat came between fight as eight Lanna Gym youngsters; 5 and 6 years old put on a spectacular exhibition display to the delight of the crowd. It was amazing to see the discipline and ability of kids so young. Each two matched off and presented the crowd with a one on one 20 second exhibition, and then all eight kicked and split wooden boards in half. A huge ovation from the crowd followed.
Next up was Lanna Gym fighter Jorge Estrada, who unlike Huerta had extremely strong punching power and squared off against Julio Mendoza of Mexico City. The fight was full of non-stop action, but at the end of the second round, Estrada has injured his left leg and didn't come out for the 3rd round, ending the Vallarta - DF professional bouts at one a piece.
The main event pitted Cesar "Mego" Palomera formally fighting out of Puerto Vallarta and now training in Guadalajara against Luis Perez of Mexico City. Palomera had a large lead after three rounds and his opponent needed not only to win the final two rounds for victory, but also needed a knockdown in one of the rounds to erase the early deficit. Perez was holding Palomera in long clinches trying to squeeze the air out of the Vallarta fighter, but also was quite wined himself and buying some needed time.
But in Muay Thai boxing, one kick can turn a fight around and Perez connected on a big one, sending Palomera to the canvas. After getting up, another strong kick sent him back down and the fight was called a TKO victory for the Mexico City fighter, as Palomera was dazed. Referee Tapia called the fight and made good decisions the whole evening, protecting the safety of the fighters first.
Once again, a big night for Muay Thai fans and another successful Solorio promoted event. How can he top this one? Heard through the grapevine, look to either January of February for a major championship event that will feature Mexican championship fights and very possibly a World championship bout as well. |
