(AP/Dario Lopez-Mills) | The driver of a bus that crashed into a freight train — killing 22 people — has been arrested on suspicion of homicide, Mexican prosecutors said Friday.
The bus was nearly flattened Thursday in the crash at a railroad crossing in the city of Cuautitlan, just north of Mexico City. Some of the bodies were so badly mangled that establishing their identities has proved difficult.
Bus driver Jose Alberto Dominguez, 36, was arrested near the site of the crash on Thursday, the attorney general's office in the State of Mexico said in a news release. Dominguez was unharmed in the collision.
Prosecutors said they had statements from five witnesses, including some of those injured in the crash, who indicated that Dominguez was at fault.
"There were several warnings with lights and whistles but in instead of slowing down the driver accelerated to try to get past the train," the statement said.
It said 22 people were killed the crash and 14 were hurt, some with life-threatening injuries. |
