(Reuters) | Acapulco, Mexico - An anti-crime campaigner who was helping promote a march against a wave of violence in this Pacific coast resort city was shot several times Tuesday by unidentified gunmen.
Patricia Calixto, 33, was returning to her car after exercising at a local beach, but when she reached her car — which carried signs protesting violence and promoting the Feb. 18 demonstration — the assailants shot her, then fled.
She suffered wounds to the abdomen and hand, and a grazing wound to the head. She was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
It was unclear whether the shooting was related to Calixto's volunteer anti-crime activities. Acapulco has been hit by a wave of bloody turf battles between drug gangs, including shoot-outs, executions, grenade attacks and beheadings, and residents planned the gathering to protest that violence.
"I hope that this attack does not have anything to do with the signs against violence she was carrying in her car ... it would be very worrisome if she were attacked because she called for peace," said Sari Enriquez, spokeswoman for United for Acapulco, one of the civic groups organizing the protest.
Guerrero State police officials confirmed the shooting, which occurred in the Pie de la Cuesta area west of the city. |
