Calderón Launches Nationwide Network Of Daycare Centers El Universal
| Calderón said statistics show "each day there are more and more women that not only work, but who are genuinely supporting their families." | Chalco, State of México - President Felipe Calderón continued his string of presenting new programs, launching a nationwide network of daycare centers for single and working mothers on Thursday.
Calderón traveled to Veracruz and this city, on the outskirts of the capital to cut the ribbons on the first daycare centers in the network. He said 40 percent of the nation´s 23 million working mothers would have access to the daycare centers. They will operate with 1 billion pesos (US$91 million) in federal funding.
Of these funds, 125 million pesos (US$11.4 million) will go toward training and paying workers to run the centers.
Calderón said statistics show "each day there are more and more women that not only work, but who are genuinely supporting their families."
"What we want to do is help them in their work," he added. "We know it is hard to be a working mother."
According to information from the Social Development Secretariat (Sedesol), the centers will be open to children ages 1 to 3 years and 11 months. Mothers who are unable to pay for the daycare centers will be given a monthly stipend of 700 pesos (US$64) after undergoing a background check.
Sedesol head Beatriz Zavala, who accompanied Calderón on the tour, said that existing daycare centers will also be incorporated into the nationwide system.
Additionally, credit plans will be available to individuals who wish to start a daycare center in their homes. These in-home daycares will be required to meet a minimum set of requirements. |
