RCMP May Help Probe Deprisco's Death in Mexico

Adam DePrisco of Woodbridge, Ont. was killed while in Mexico.
Acapulco, Mexico - The governor of a Mexican state where a Canadian tourist was killed said Wednesday he has decided the RCMP may assist in the investigation.

State officials have "offered the Canadian government the opportunity for its Mounted Police to collaborate," Gov. Zeferino Torreblanca of Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located, told a news conference Wednesday.

He did not say whether the offer has been accepted.

Acapulco authorities said Adam DePrisco, 19, of Woodbridge, Ont., died from injuries sustained during a hit-and-run car accident last month.

But his travelling companion and a local official speaking on condition of anonymity said he was beaten by nightclub workers and hit by a car while trying to escape his attackers.

DePrisco's family have also said they were told by doctors DePrisco's injuries did not indicate a hit-and-run accident and they believe he was beaten.

Acapulco has experienced a wave of killings as rival drug cartels fight over coastal smuggling routes.

In one of the boldest attacks, assailants dressed as soldiers barged into two state police stations Tuesday, demanded the officers hand over their guns and then opened fire. Five police investigators and two secretaries were killed.

Last week, two Canadian tourists were wounded in the Pacific coast resort after gunmen fired into a hotel lobby.
