| Although Mexico has legislated rules against domestic violence, the phenomenon has never disappeared. | Mexico City - Some 21. 5 percent of Mexican couples suffered from domestic violence, said UN representative to Mexico Thierry Lemaresquier on Wednesday.
Just one day before the International Women's Day, Lemaresquier, who described the situation in Mexico as "worrying," called for a new law and an effective justice system to save Mexican women from violence in the home and to ensure those who break the law are punished.
About one out of three Mexican women had suffered domestic violence in their lives, the UN official cited a survey conducted by the Mexican Health Ministry as saying.
Eastern state Quintana Roo had the highest domestic violence rate of 31.8 percent, followed by central state Tlaxcala with 29 percent, northern state Coahuila with 28.1 percent, western state Nayarit with 28 percent and southern state Oaxaca with 27.5 percent.
