Mexico to Investigate Oaxaca Row Prensa Latina
| Mariano Azuela Güitrón (b. April 1, 1936 in Mexico City) is a Mexican jurist who has been a member of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) since 1983 and served as its President (Chief Justice) from 2003 to 2007. | Mexican courts will investigate possible violations of individual rights during the political and social conflict in Oaxaca that shook the region in 2006.
Supreme Court president, Guillermo Ortiz gave the green light to a request by the Chamber of Deputies to investigate events during the teacher s strike in that state.
Congresswoman Aleida Alvarez delivered additional information on violation of guarantees and on the deaths of 26 persons in Oaxaca that points directly to Governor Ulises Ruiz.
She pointed out the importance that the Court investigate excesses committed by local and federal authorities against Oaxaca society.
Mexican Public Defender Jose Luis Soberanes recently denounced the lack of interest and capacity of the authorities to resolve what happened in that state between June 6, 2006 and January 31.
Soberanes presented Congress his report on Oaxaca and on the crisis that began regarding teacher s demands that led to the death of 20 persons, 381 injured and 266 arrested, some still in prison.
In his opinion, officials in charge of public security exceeded the use of force and violated human rights, security, personal integrity and property. |
