Mexico Makes Arrests in Police Killings Associated Press
A suspected drug cartel lieutenant sought in the killings of two police officers has been arrested in the border city of Tijuana, authorities said Monday.
Victor Magno Escobar was among four men and two women detained during a raid Saturday that also uncovered a cache of weapons, the Public Safety Department said in a statement.
"He is considered one of the main operators of the Arellano Felix cartel," the statement said, referring to the Tijuana-based drug gang. "In this raid, federal agents also detained a gang of kidnappers and seized an arsenal of weapons."
Acting on information gathered in the raid, police descended on a second home where they arrested three suspected kidnappers and freed two gagged victims.
Magno Escobar was being investigated in the killings of two Tijuana police officers in 2003. He was taken to Mexico City for questioning.
President Felipe Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police to fight trafficking in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, in January but few major arrests have been reported so far. |
