President Calderón Speaks on Security and Justice Presidency of the Republic
| Mexico's President Felipe Calderon speaks during an interview in his office at the official residence, Los Pinos, in Mexico City, March 22, 2007. (Reuters/Andrew Winning) | Mexican President Felipe Calderón declared that one of his main aims since the beginning of his government has been to restore minimal conditions of security. “We want to restore society’s trust in our institutions, obviously, in the forces of order and particularly in the institutions responsible for the procurement and administration of justice. Nowadays, public security is a priority issue on the national agenda, because we need to recover those conditions of security to ensure our citizens the peaceful existence they deserve and also to ensure that our country is viewed as a place of certainty, a safe place for investing, prospering, creating jobs and getting ahead."
As part of its recently implemented Integral Crime Prevention Strategy, the government is also building a Single Criminal Information System which, based on Platform Mexico, will generate police intelligence. It has also, added the president, sent the Legislative Branch a package of reforms of the Justice Procurement System, which pursues the following aims: first is to establish a new relationship between the function of the police force and the work of the State Attorney’s Office; second is to achieve a highly qualified police force in order to deal successfully with crime, which is why a National Police Development System has been proposed to establish clear criteria for the admission, selection and professionalizing of the police force; and third is to establish new guarantees for the integrity and safety of crime victims.
The president went on to say that he is aware of the public’s concern about establishing oral trials. To this end, the government has established a Council for the Implementation of Oral Trials on Penal Matters. He added that in order to defend the rule of law, the country's laws and institutions would be reviewed in the near future. The president ended by saying that unless the country wins the battle against crime, it will have wasted an historic opportunity to lead Mexico to a better future.
