Mexico to Maintain Tortilla Price
email this pageprint this pageemail usTarique - Prensa Latina

Mexican Economy Secretary Eduardo Sojo has confirmed the possibility of continuing implementation of a January agreement that set the price of a kg of tortillas, the staple food of Mexicans, at 70 US cents, an agreement due to expire April 30.

Sojo told local media that the government was analyzing this possibility with the entire production chain to prevent the price of that basic food from increasing.

In a telephone interview from Japan, where he is on a working visit, Sojo said he favoured dialogue with the National Shop Association as well as with corn producers and sellers, to define a strategy to keep the official price stable.

Despite the reduced corn supply affecting the country, the government refuses to allow excessive prices for a kilogram of tortillas.

However, a recent survey showed that 33 per cent of Mexican establishments have no knowledge of the agreement signed with the government two months ago.

According to the poll, carried out in 41 cities in 27 Mexican states, a kg of tortillas cost 1.20 USD in April.
