Imprisoned Canadian Back Home in Abbotsford Sheena Jackson - Abbotsford News
| Peter Kimber arrives at Abbotsford Airport late Monday night to be greeted by family members, including grandchild Lesha and stepson, Brandon. (John Morrow - Abbotsford News) | Former Mission resident Peter Kimber is back home in Abbotsford with his family after spending more than two years in a Mexican jail on fraud-related charges.
The 44-year-old was greeted by dozens of friends, family and media when he arrived at around 11.30 p.m. Monday at Abbotsford Airport.
Among the well-wishers were Kimber’s three children Jessica, Jonathan and Julia.
“It’s heartfelt tears, you know. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” he told the Abbotsford News. “But when you are told tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow – and tomorrow never comes, you give up hope for a while.”
Although Kimber was released from prison on March 9, he was held in an immigration holding centre in Mexico City until last week after which he was flown to Toronto. He maintains he did nothing wrong to land behind bars.
“No, heavens no,” he said. “There’s absolutely no possible way I have broken any law and they know that as well. I have the documentation to prove that from day one when they arrested me and none of it matters to those people whatsoever. They will do whatever they want and there’s absolutely no justification and no help.”
Kimber’s eldest daughter Jessica said having her father back home under the same roof is “awesome.”
“I’m just so happy,” the 21-year-old told the Abbotsford News Tuesday. “It feels weird. When I woke up this morning he was sitting with my kids reading. It feels good.”
Kimber’s ordeal began over a dispute with a British couple that he was involved with in a house building project. He said the ordeal had torn his family apart.
“When someone steals your life it’s despicable. When they destroy the lives of an entire family it’s as low as you can get,” he said.
The former contractor said he has “many hard feelings” against the Mexican authorities. “When anybody can take your life and play with it the way they want and have absolutely no other reason but extortion, welcome to Mexico. And there’s absolutely no other way to describe that. They will and can do anything they want. Innocent or guilty does not matter. It’s how much you got to pay and if you don’t have it to pay, you stay.” |
