LA Mayor Plans Mexico, El Salvador Swing to Discuss Trade, Gangs Associated Press
| Former president Jimmy Carter, right and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa share a moment before formally announcing that Los Angeles will be the host city for Habitat for Humanity's Jimmy Carter Work Project 2007, in South Los Angeles, Saturday, March 31, 2007. Plans call for 30 new Habitat homes to be built and another 70 homes belonging to low-income families to be repaired in several area communities beginning in September. (AP/Reed Saxon) | Los Angeles - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is planning a nine-day swing through El Salvador and Mexico next month to promote trade and discuss ways to prevent violent gangs from crossing international borders.
Villaraigosa will meet with business leaders on the trip, May 1-May 9, to encourage investment in the city.
As part of an effort to ease air traffic and overcrowding at Los Angeles International Airport, the mayor will urge Mexican and Salvadoran airlines to consider new routes to LA/Ontario International Airport and other regional facilities. Ontario airport is located about 50 miles east of Los Angeles International Airport.
Villaraigosa and Police Chief William Bratton will meet with President Antonio Saca in El Salvador to discuss gang violence. Authorities say a lack of information-sharing has allowed gang members to cross borders unidentified by local police - bringing weapons and rivalries that lead to violence.
The mayor begins his trip May 1 and May 2 in El Salvador, then has later stops in Mexico in Mexico City, Guadalajara City and Leon.
In Mexico City, he will meet with President Felipe Calderon to foster long-term business and financial relationships with Mexico. |
