Second-Place Can Tour Finish For Speirs Newswire
Winnipeg's Adam Speirs fell a few strokes short but posted yet another impressive showing on the Canadian Tour on the weekend.
Speirs fashioned a three-under 68 yesterday to finish tied for second at the $125,000 US Riviera Nayarit Classic in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico with a four-round total of 13-under 271. Speirs pocketed $9,750 in winnings.
Alberta's Wes Heffernan, who led by five strokes heading into the final round, also recorded a three-under 68 to win the Classic with an 18-under 266 total. Anthony Rodriguez of Texas shot a final-round 65, moving him into the tie with Speirs. Earlier this year, Speirs had finished fourth at the Northern California Classic.
Australian Adam Bland and American Stephen Gangluff finished tied for fourth, six shots back, after respective rounds of 68 and 67.
The win was Heffernan's second this season.
"It was a weird feeling having that lead," Heffernan told the Canadian Press. "It's not as comfortable as you would think, a different frame of mind."
"I was nervous after that bogey but then got into a rhythm after that."
Heffernan will return to the United States this week to particpate in qualifying for the U.S. Open.
PEGGER WINS BIRDIE TITLE
Winnipeg's David Snider had his way with the birdies on the weekend.
Snider won the Canadian under-19 badminton championship in Calgary yesterday. Snider overwhelmed Alberta's Alex Pang 21-14, 21-12 in the final. Snider will remain in Calgary where he will compete in the Pan American Badminton Championships, to be played tomorrow through Saturday.

The Bison women's volleyball team lost a heartbreaker in the gold medal final of the 21-and-under volleyball national open at the Investors Group Athletic Centre yesterday.
The Calgary Dinos nipped the Bisons 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 19-17) in a dramatic final. The Bisons had entered the match with a 7-0 mark.
On the men's side, the Fog from Alberta beat Winnipeg's Strike 3-2 (25-16, 21-25, 21-25, 28-26, 20-18) for the gold. |
