Mutilated Body Dumped Outside Mexican Army Base Reuters
| Police officers inspect a police car that was shot at in the resort city of Cancun, Mexico, May 3, 2007. Unknown gunmen shot at the car, killing one policeman and injuring at least three others, while they were patrolling the streets of Cancun, police said. (Reuters/Victor Ruiz) | Mexican police found a mutilated, beheaded body dumped outside a military base on the U.S. border on Thursday, the latest gruesome murder in Mexico's drug war.
The torso, headless and missing its limbs, was wrapped in a plastic bag and blankets and spotted by passers-by before dawn in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, near San Diego, and not far from a Mexican police anti-drugs squad office.
It was one of the goriest among some 900 gangland-style murders this year by feuding drug cartels.
"An execution of this kind can only be committed by organized crime," said an official at the Baja California state attorney general's office.
Local media said the man, who had been dead for several days, may have been a police officer reported missing several days ago. The state attorney general said it could be a message to frighten police trying to clamp down on drug gangs.
A vicious battle between rival drug cartels has continued unabated this year, despite President Felipe Calderon having sent thousands of troops into drug trafficking states. Suspected drug gang hitmen killed five soldiers in western Mexico on Tuesday. |
