Miss Universe Encourages Bicycle Use in Mexico EFE
| Zuleyka Rivera (NTX) | Mexico - Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera took a spin on a bicycle with municipal authorities to promote their campaign to get commuters to abandon driving for cycling in this congested, pollution-choked metropolis of 18 million people.
Wearing a helmet and a white T-shirt, the Puerto Rican pedaled along the streets accompanied by more than a dozen capital government officials, among them the city's tourism secretary, Alejandra Barrales.
Wearing her Miss Universe sash, Rivera joined in a bike ride through several tourist zones and along the traditional Paseo de la Reforma.
Upon her arrival at the treelined Alameda Central, where she met with Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, Rivera said that she was a supporter of using bicycles as an ideal means to reduce traffic and pollution in the city.
Meanwhile, the Federal District environment secretary, Martha Delgado, said that the municipal government will receive financing from the World Bank to undertake a project to identify the proper places where a series of bike paths through the city can be built.
For two years, Ebrard has been promoting a program to give people the incentive to use bicycles in the capital, a program that, among other things, obligates municipal officials to use that means of transport to get to work once per month. |
